assign a moderator with large groups to ensure that conversations do not diverge
and everyone feels included in the discussion

type what you want to say ahead of time in notepad
so that it doesn't show up as "so-and-so" is typing -

Project Objective and Focus Areas

    • We want to provide sustainable engineering solutions for improving the quality of life and a viable future in developing communities
    • Build with the community and not just for the community
    • Projects focused on infrastructure will require a great deal of collaboration between many organizations and institutes
    • Political stability is a key factor in selecting our focus region
    • Southern Africa is a good place to start

Types of organizations that will need to be engaged

governments
NGOs
Universities
local community resources - farmers
for-profit corporations
banks
etc...

Reasons why Southern Africa would be a good start

  • Opportunity to demonstrate the full potential of sustainable technology in "green field" projects
  • Relatively stable economy - potential to grow
  • Others who have tried projects in these areas have been successful
  • Ability to make a large impact due to the size of the need

  1. Here's a private and charitable organization founded in the 70's that focuses on small community-based projects to accomplish their broader objectives. Look at the "About Us" link.

Their functions are very diverse. I feel like this diverse approach may only be possible once you're as established as they are. Their total revenue and support for FY2006 was about $50,000,000. I think that to begin, we'd have to start out with a very simple objective. I also feel that our strategies/programs should be fairly simple, practical and easily realizable. I think that this approach will be more appealing to our stakeholders, because they will realize that we have no experience in a project like this and will probably only feel comfortable funding a project that is fairly simple and has a clear path towards success and implementation. Furthermore, we'll probably only have very limited funds to begin, so we won't want to spread our projects too thinly.
